BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON ANNUAL CONFERENCE

2006

On Friday, May 26 the resolution to prohibit discrimination in receiving members into UM congregations passed the 222nd session of the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference by a vote of 392-352! See story by Melissa Lauber in the Annual Conference's daily publication, "Conference Affirms Open Doors to Everyone" (it is the third story in the document).

Read the "Resolution to Prohibit Discrimination in Receiving Members into United Methodist Congregations" (in PDF). See Bishop John R. Schol's rulings of law in response to two requests for rulings related to this resolution - scroll down to the Second and Third Rulings of Law. Such rulings of law are routinely reviewed by the United Methodist Judicial Council. In October 2006, the Judicial Council upheld Bishop Schol's rulings of law (for the text of the decision, see Judicial Council Memoradum No. 1044).

2005

At the 2005 Annual Conference , a petition passed that called for dialogue with LGBT people, rather than about them, within each district of the Baltimore-Washington Confernece. As a result, Bishop Schol formed a team of people who are exploring how that dialogue might take place in a safe and respectful manner. Read an update on that team after its first five meetings (article from the UMConnection).
